The seaside village of Nopigia is located 6km east of Kissamos and 30km west of Chania city. It is built on the east side of Kissamos Bay, next to the basis of Rodopos Cape and after the east end of Drapanias beach. In front of the village lies a long beach, which stretches to the west up to Kissamos.
Transfer to the sandy beach in Nopigia
The beach is sandy with clear and shallow water. Nopigia village is located nearby, thus you will find all the necessary facilities there, such as umbrellas, showers, restaurants, and accommodations in a tranquil environment. If you walk to the east, the beach becomes rockier and more secluded. There are several pebbly and rocky coves to the east. After 2km you meet the church of Panagia and the lovely remote beaches of Chini.
It is assumed that Nopigia exist since ancient times. According to tradition, during the return of Agamemnon from Troy, he landed in the area to offer sacrifice to the gods, but had to leave immediately, because the Trojan prisoners tried to set fire to his fleet.
Within a small distance from Nopigia, following the road to Koleni, are the ruins of the ancient town Mythimna, surrounded by olive groves. Nearby, you can visit the cruciform Church of St.Panteleimon, with its cylindrical dome and rectangular floor shape. West of Nopigia, you can visit the ruins of a Roman settlement and a church with Byzantine frescoes, dedicated to Saint George. The orientation is from North to South, and not according to Greek Orthodoxy from East to West. Presumably, this is because it was built on the site of an earlier Roman temple, the direction of which was retained. East of Nopigia, there is a small seaside theater, which has been built in 1992 with the standards of ancient Greek theaters and has very good acoustics. Finally, 200m from the main street of the village, there is the cave of Rizospilios, an underground river.
